Summer days & nights always bring up visions of sitting on the back porch, enjoying a cold drink & enjoying the summer air. Mike & I love entertaining others, even if it’s last minute. And there are really simple things you can do that will add oomph to a normally boring summer evening spread.
One of the ideas I saw in a Pottery Barn catalogue & thought it was brilliant.
They had a setup similar to this.
Here’s what you need:
Cantaloupe
Honeydew
Light drink (could you go with a sparkling water or a fresca or what I used which is a moscato)
Ice cream scoop
Let your guests scoop out a bit of fruit & add to their glass then pour your drink of choice. It gives an ordinary drink some pizzaz.
You probably already knew this, but just trim off a bit of the bottom of your fruit to allow to stand.
Add some crackers & cheese or nuts & you’ve got a perfect summer entertaining spread.
Do you have something specific you serve in the summer? I think watermelon would also be absolutely delicious! What do you think?
I know school has started back for a lot of people but I hope you’re still able to enjoy the summer nights!

Oh that’s awesome Diane! You could do all kinds of things: Pick the decade they started work in as a theme; Figure out what hobby the retiree will most enjoy & use that as a theme: If he likes beer, do a beer-tasting party; You could do a “Cheers to the Best Years” theme; You could decorate it very tropical for a “mini vacation” to kick start his freedom; If you want to do something simple…white lights strung across the deck instantly create a festive feel. Hope this helps stir some inspiration!! <3 Heidi
