Hey party people!
I wanted to start writing some resource posts for you to help with your party planning. So, every Monday I’m going to write a post that will help you out. If you have a certain question or issue that you’ve wondered about, I’d love to hear it.
Today, we’re talking about how much food to prepare for a party. I always tend to prepare too much because I’ve always been scared that I’d run out. So far, I usually have too many leftovers. My thighs can’t take it anymore, I tell ya. I think we’ve all been there, when you end up eating leftover pasta salad every day for a week after a shower or party (I’m referring specifically to a funny story my friend Jessica told me).
This chart is a great guide on how much to prepare based on your number of guests:
This is a basic guide but here are a few more tips I’d add –
* Appetizers – How many different KINDS?
Before a Meal: 2-3 different kinds
In Between Meals: 4-5 different kinds (this would be like an afternoon shower or party)
Heavy Hors D’oeuvres: 8-10 different kinds
* Desserts – How many different KINDS?
If it’s for a dessert bar – 4-5 different kinds
Normally – 2-3 different kinds
* Beverages – 2 servings per person for a 2-3 hour event; if the event goes longer…add 1 extra serving for every 1.5 hours.
* Dietary Restrictions – With as many people that can’t have certain foods, I always go by this rule when I create a menu…
1 Vegetarian Menu Item (this can be as basic as a salad)
1 Gluten-Free Menu Item
1 Dairy Free Menu Item
1 Dessert that has no nuts (just in case)
With this rule, I know that at least my guests won’t be starving. If it’s a small enough group, I’ll ask in advance if there’s any dietary restrictions but that information isn’t always available (especially with a larger group).
If you ever need any Gluten-Free dessert recipes, email me. My husband and I are both gluten-free, so I’ve got some great party recipes that even the gluten peeps will enjoy.
Hope this helps! If there are any other party questions you’ve had in the past or presently, let me know: heidi@heidirew.com or you can leave your question in the comment section.
Got some fun stuff for you this week…but until then…Party On!
