Update: If you’d like to learn how to create a star or other washi tape applique, I did a post with an easy tutorial here.
Hey party people!
Happy Memorial Day (or almost)!
I love Memorial Day. The men & women who sacrifice their lives for us & for this country are the heros among us all. I am so thankful for the freedoms we have in this country. Memorial Day is a day to remember the people who gave their lives to fight for our freedom. One day just isn’t sufficient, is it?
I have to admit that I also love Memorial Day decorations. The combination of red, white, and blue is beautiful. However, my husband is going to ground me if I buy one more plate/serveware/cup/etc. ;p He refers to it as hoarding. I refer to it as party prepping. I always want to be prepared to host a Memorial Day party…or any other party.
Being the good wife I am, I decided to come up with a better idea than buying new cups & plates for Memorial Day.
Using plain cups I already had, I “Memorialized” them using washi tape. The tape comes off after use, so my plain cups can be restored to their original state.
The materials are minimal. All you need are regular drinking glasses, washi tape (you can find it through Etsy, Paper Source, your local craft store & even Target), and scissors.
The project takes 5-10 minutes & your Memorial Day table will go from lame to Ah-may-zing.
The star is a little more complicated. I’ll show you a tutorial on how to do create the star on Friday’s post.
There is a whole slew of patriotic decorations you can create, though.
You can create American flags on the cups. You could do different numbers using the red & blue washi tape. You could do fireworks or starbursts.
Any other ideas?
So for a few dollars, I was able to have a whole Memorial Day (or Patriotic) cup set just by using washi tape.
Don’t stop there, though. Use washi tape to jazz up regular vases (like I did for the mint, peach & gold event for Mohawk & Builders Floor Covering), add a stripe to napkins or even create little flags like I did in the first picture.
These would also be perfect for the 4th of July! Pin this for later (just click on the “Pin It” button on the bottom of the page).
If you do end up doing this, take a picture & email it to me so I can post it on facebook! (heidi@heidirew.com) I love to brag on ya!
Happy Memorial Day!

What a fabulous and fun idea! These would be so good for taking to a picnic. And if you get the cheapie cups, you wouldn’t have to stress about getting them all back home. Thanks for sharing at Whatever Goes Wednesday. We’ll be featuring these at Someday Crafts tomorrow, so come visit if you have a minute!

Love it and I am totally in the mood to maybe grab my husband and Mom for a Memorial day picnic on Monday! I may use plastic cups for this. Also, can you show how you made the silver ware covering? I love the striped paper! I am imagining this is like scrapbook paper?

Thanks Kim! A Memorial Day picnic sounds wonderful! The silverware covering was actually a “fry basket liner.” I found a pack on sale at World Market for $1 so I got it. I just taped the sides together in the back to create a little pocket. You could really do this with any kind of paper. Just cut two squares (just to keep it easy), glue two edges (that are perpendicular to one another),fold the corner of the glued edges up slightly and then fold & tape the two triangles on the side together in the back. Insert your silverware & bam. I’ll add that to my future post list so I can show you instead of just describing it here. Thanks again Kim! <3 Heidi
