Hey party people! Have you ever been planning a party and can’t find the right partyware? Have you ever thrown a party & forgot to get the plates? Have you ever thrown a party that you’d love to make really personal and unique? Well…this is the DIY project for you…
DIY party plates…
Take plain jane white plates and transform them into personalized and unique party plates.
These are all the materials you’ll need…plus white plates.
Make sure the white plates can absorb liquid. Styrofoam plates don’t work as well. I used the paper Chinet plates.
Step 1: Fill a small cup with water and add the food coloring (of your choice) to the water until it reaches the desired shade.
Step 2: Use your paint brush to create designs on the plates with the food coloring water.
Your design could be a chevron pattern, an initial, flowers, or polka-dots (just to name a few).
Paint on the plates like you would a canvas and let dry.
Tip: After you dip the paint brush in your “paint,” tap the excess off. If you get too much on your brush, it will create puddles on the plate.
I know that some parents prefer for their kids not to have any kind of regular food coloring. If that’s the case, here’s a link for a recipe to make your own as well as what brands to look for online and in the stores.
This DIY project doesn’t just have to be for parties. You can make this a fun summer project for the kids. They can create their own lunch/dinner plates.
P.S. If you are looking for these particular plates, we got ours at Costco. We got a big package & it has lasted through many outdoor parties!
p.s. This is YOUR official invite to the party… join in on the Parties for Pennies Facebook page, Twitter, and Pinterest!

Thanks so much Bonnie!! Yeah…the options are endless! I remember a friend’s family that always had a special plate for the birthday boy/girl to eat on the day of their birthday. It’d be so fun to write a fun message for the birthday boy/girl…even if it’s just for a family meal. <3 Heidi
