Hey party people!
I love milk glass. Every time I see some in a thrift store, estate sale or a retail store…my hand does this weird jerky movement toward my wallet. My wallet & my husband’s voice will sometimes apprehend that movement but, none the less, it happens every time.
When I was getting ready to plan a baby shower for a friend, I really wanted lots of milk glass…specifically, I wanted these gray milk glass cake stands.
I went to one of my favorite online party suppliers, Sweet Lulu. I love her cake stands (I love EVERYTHING on there, actually) but I couldn’t swing the $65 price tag & she didn’t have any gray cake stands. So, I decided to DIY a milk glass cake stand.
I know there are multiple cake stand tutorials out there but I wanted mine to have a lip around the edge & I wanted a thicker stem & a broader “foot.”
Here’s what I found at my local thrift store –
I found a tupperware lid ($0.77) with the “lip” I was looking for & a ceramic candle stick ($1.21). I also got some primer & glossy gray spray paint (buy these at your local hardware store).
Here are the three simple steps you need to create your own DIY Milk Glass Cake Stand:
Step 1: Attach the candlestick to the tupperware lid using a hot glue gun. (I tried using E600 but it ended up falling off…the hot glue worked much better)
Step 2: Spray the entire stand with primer. (you may need multiple coats in this step & step #3)
Step 3: Spray the entire stand with glossy gray (or whatever color your prefer) paint.
Wait for it to dry & you’re done.
*Side Note: We put down parchment paper on the bottom of the stand instead of placing the food directly on it. Just wanted to make extra sure no paint ended up touching the food.
All together, with the gray spray paint (I already had the primer), I spent just a little over $7 on my DIY Milk Glass Cake Stand. It doesn’t look exactly like the cute one from Sweet Lulu but it worked perfectly!
*Disclaimer: I adore Sweet Lulu & buy a lot of party supplies from them. With the budget that I had for this shower, I just couldn’t swing it. You will swoon at all the adorable items Sweet Lulu has for parties!
Plan your coffee time now to take a look at pictures from the baby shower! I’ll be posting them tomorrow! Can’t wait!
Until then…party ON!

Oh…I love this!!! It looks so good! Will any glossy spray paint work or do you recommend a particular brand?
Heidi Rew says
Thanks Julia! Any glossy paint should work but I did use Rustoleum. Rustoleum usually is my go-to. 🙂 <3 Heidi

Why did you use a tupperware lid instead of a plate or platter?
Heidi Rew says
Rhoda, It was just what I had around the house. You DEFINITELY can use a regular plate. If you do that, I’d recommend using E6000 to attach them. Honestly think a regular plate would be better. Thanks so much for checking out the post! Have a confetti-filled day! <3 Heidi
