Hey party people!
I can’t wait to show you the stunning bridal bouquet and centerpieces Owen’s Flower Shop did for our wedding shoot this Wednesday. Today, I asked Kelly Wright of Owen’s Flower Shop to give us some tips and trends on wedding floral arrangements.
Kelly, give us a little background. When did you first have an interest in floral design?
I’ve been interested in floral design since I was a little girl. My parents always said it came from my great grandmother who had a beautiful garden and arranged flowers in her home… an old time Do it Yourselfer!! At 12 years old, I had my own garden and was always whacking flowers and stuff from the yard and bringing inside. In high school as a Junior, I took my first design class and starting working in a flower shop at 16 years old… so now I’m up to about 25 years in this business and I LOVE IT!!
What are the top things you wish every bride knew?
When I talk to a bride, the first thing is I want her to know….. don’t worry about the small stuff…. then I want her to know, her budget, how many attendants and her colors. We are professionals, so we are going to do whatever her dream and wish is… and make it happen!!
What type of flowers are most requested right now? Any trends you’re seeing?
The trend right now seems to be low-key, casual outdoor weddings. It used to be ALL church weddings, but that has really really changed over the past 4 years. It used to be very formal weddings and cascading bouquets. Not anymore…all loose handwrapped looking bouquets. By far, the most requested flower, since they all see them in magazines, are Peonies. The bummer on that is they are only available in certain seasons and ALWAYS crazy expensive. Like I said before, I tell a Bride, “Tell me exactly what you want, no matter your budget, then lets figure out how to make it work/happen”!
Any tips to keep your arrangements looking fresh after the florist has dropped them off for the wedding?
Since most bouquets are the handwrapped loose style, we tend to deliver them in a vase of water… best thing for them once they are on location is keep them in water as long as possible, away from extreme heat and a spritz of fresh water makes for happy flowers!!
Thank you so much, Kelly, for sharing your great tips and letting us in on the current trends!
